I'm Back, Baby!

Two and a half weeks later, we've survived a snowstorm, 11 days without any power, heat, or running water, several days of dealing with other customers in similar situations at one of the only places in town with power and internet, and a two or three several-day-long runs between showers.

I don't want to say "It all really sucked," even though it did. I was cold from the moment I got home until halfway to work every day; we were showering at Ryan's father's house every couple of days; we only had the chance to do laundry there once, so I was wearing a lot of dirty clothes; I was brushing my teeth at work every morning; we were melting snow to flush the toilet; and finally, we missed the season premiere of Bones. The misery!

On the other hand, we were relatively lucky in that we had a couple of places to go to charge things and shower and feel warm for a little bit. Going to work was a definite lifesaver, most of the time. I say "most of the time" because by the last couple of days, I felt filthy and stupid and just...not human. I was a wreck. Mom got power back on Tuesday, so I was able to shower before work, and it made a huge difference. I didn't have to concentrate to remember which were the big lids or little lids, which coffee needed to be brewed, or if 8 was 5 plus 2 or 3.

...I'm not kidding, by the way. It was always that number, too; Sunday and Monday, every time I had to create 8 dollars in change, I had to think if I added one or two singles to the five. What the hell.

Ryan stayed surprisingly upbeat during the whole thing, especially once we borrowed the radio from Mom and he had music to fill the hours. We also did our best to be productive, which resulted in our little home being almost completely furnished and decorated to our hopes, something we thought would take a couple of months. I'd come home to find a few pictures hung up, or the kitchen organized, or the bookcase rearranged.

Of course, he also racked up over 30 hours in Final Fantasy V on his GameBoy DS, but whatever. It's not like I read through 5 books in as many nights or anything...

I am extremely proud of Ryan for his humor and optimism throughout the entire thing, especially as he was the worst off of the two of us. He had no job to go to for distraction, his favorite activities all require internet or at least electricity, and a combination of no running dehumidifier and several hours of smoky candles every night made him wheeze and cough and snore like you wouldn't believe.

The biggest difference this made to us, besides being pretty miserable for almost two weeks and spending way more on fast food than I would like to admit, is the diet. Ryan had planned on starting his cleanse, the first 10 days of his 100 day extreme diet, on Monday the 31st. Due to the fact that cleanses usually involve, you know, cleansing one's system, and we were resorting to flushing our toilet infrequently with melted snow (a toilet, I should add, that resides in a room with no windows to either let in light or let out smells), he decided to postpone the cleanse, for the sake of both our comfort and our relationship.

We finally got power back on Tuesday evening, and have been thoroughly enjoying it the past two days...even if we spent almost the entirety of Wednesday out of the house. We can watch TV! We can run the dehumidifier! We don't have to go to sleep at 10 just because we're bored! The amazement never ends!

Yesterday we bought $70 dollars of fruits and vegetables, last night he had his last soda (Coca-Cola), last beer (Stella Artois), and last pizza (Frank Pepe in Manchester, half sausage and peppers, half chicken and bacon), and today began The Cleanse. His breakfast was an Apple Pear smoothie, made with 2 apples, 2 pears, half a cup of grapes, a chunk of ginger, and some cinnamon. Pretty tasty! We also updated our Wii Fit Plus profiles to start fresh, and Ryan decided to do a run. He covered a little over three miles in half an hour, burning almost 350 calories! Color my impressed.

I am being a weenie and not doing a cleanse. It's party being a wimp over not wanting to eat only fruits and veggies for 10 days, and part is being concerned with how I'd fare at work. Besides, someone has to eat the leftover now-forbidden food left in the house, right?

On Sunday, the 20th, we'll start the next, biggest phase: 90 days following an almost vegan diet: no meat, no dairy, no processed food, no sugar, no caffeine, staying almost entirely to produce, whole grains, and legumes.

In the next 10 days, I'll be doing a combination of weaning and last hurrahs, getting in my last bits of favorite soon-to-be-off-limits foods while lessening the amount of fat, sugar, caffeine, and dairy I partake in each day. Have I mentioned where I work? Have I asked for many wishes of good luck?

Honestly, I am looking forward to it, to the challenge of it, the healthy habits we'll be learning, and the undoubtedly delicious creations Ryan will be whipping up for us with his new pantry.

I'll keep you posted!

I'd Wish For Rain, But It's Come And Gone And Didn't Do Squat.

Really? I haven't updated since Tuesday? Sheesh. I blame the heat. It's melted my damn brain.

It is SO. FUCKING. HOT. Yes, I dropped the f-bomb, it is just that hot.

Weather.com warned us of a heat index between 110-115. My car read 105 when we first turned it on. We chatted briefly with the Post Woman on our way out, and she said the thermometers inside the postal trucks were reading 130.

Our apartment is pretty awful at night. During the day, not so bad as long as we leave the shades closed. At night, everyone gets home and turns on their computers and uses their ovens (well, maybe not), and we have apartments below us and behind us. Despite a few fans and adjusting of the AC, it's still 80 in here at it's best.

I used to love summer...but that was before it tried to kill me.

Nature ALWAYS Wins.

Today started out pretty meh, but work made up for it in spades. Tomorrow looks to be a good day, Monday looks to be ker-awesome, Tuesday will most likely be normal, then I have three days off in a row...:D

I made cookies last night. First batch burned (but Ryan still loves them), second batch was just right, and the third batch had butterscotch chips mixed in, and they are redonkulous. Umnumnum.

It was extremely hot and humid all day, then rained a bit in the evening. Around 9 the sky turned this creepy yellow-green, but that cleared up, and it hasn't rained again yet despite the heavy, foreboding clouds all over the place.

I drove home watching the fireworks in some parts of the sky, and lightning in other parts. Nature wins, of course.

Off to soup and time with the man. Tomorrow is an earlier day, so bed before midnight...hopefully.

Thoughts on Driving In Indiana.

Recently I've noticed that, since moving to Indiana, I pay less attention to traffic lights.

Don't worry: I slow when it's yellow, stop when it's red, go when it's green. But, unless I am the first in line (a rarity), I don't watch the light as much as I used to. I pay attention to cars more than before--I follow the lead of the one in front of me in lieu of watching the light, I keep an awareness on the ones to either side, I keep half an eye on those ahead turning from side streets or parking lots.

I am surrounded with more cars on a daily basis than ever before in my life--and this is taking into considering that I was on the highway 100% more often in Connecticut than here. Last week I gave a friend a ride to the South Bend airport after following her to her home in Goshen, meaning two long trips on the bypass. It was one of only two times I've been on anything resembling a highway since we got off 80/90 last May and first drove down our street. It took me way too long to realize--oh, right, I have to go 60 now! AAA THIS IS SO FAST AAAA.

Anyway--more cars. Which means more people. Which means more opportunity for miscommunication and accidents. And did I mention this is a college town? The number of times I glance over and see a cell phone in the driver's hand, either next to their head or in front of their face, is terrifying. So I watch cars.

As I said, I pay less attention to traffic lights. I also pay less attention to, well, anything that isn't a car. I don't watch the sides of the road in case a squirrel or deer decides to try and play chicken with my car. I've only seen one deer since arriving--it launched itself out of the woods on Ironwood one rainy night last summer, glancing off my front right bumper as I slammed on the brakes and disappearing into the bushes on the other side--and almost no squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, etc. Beside the deer, I've only ever had to brake for other cars and a single dog, a tiny Shitzu lost on a residential street.

The roads are straight and level, so there's no blind corners to watch carefully in case of surprises on the far side. I no longer drive down the one "wooded" section (also dead-straight), and when I did I only had that one incident with the deer. The biggest danger here is other cars.

I think about Connecticut roads--89, 74, 44--and heave deep sighs of longing. There is one--one--mildly swooping piece of road here. It's on Cleveland just past 933, less than a quarter mile long, and gave me an honest-to-God Connecticut flashback the first time I went down it. I will grudgingly admit that, only 90% of the roads are completely straight, but that other 10% is not curvy so much as...jagged and indecisive. As if the two stubborn city planners met up along an intersection and neither one wanted to budge the rest of their maps over a few yards.

Changing subjects slightly, from road differences to weather differences: winter was, as warned, much harsher here. I saw more snow from October to February than I ever saw in five Connecticut winters. However, as much snow as there was, it was almost entirely light and fluffy, almost inconsequential. Shoveling it took a tiny fraction of the time it would in Connecticut, even when the car was out of sight when you started.

The summer was surprisingly hot and humid, the temperature hitting the 90's regularly. I was told about "solar days," when citizens are warned to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible to avoid the intense UV rays. Fall was a blink, a week or two of mild weather between scorching and freezing.

Sunny days are gorgeous, barely a cloud in the bright blue sky. It never breezes but it blows, never rains but it floods. To sum up: weather in Indiana means it.

Some things never change, however. I am pleased to discover that, despite the intensity of Midwest weather, despite being 800 miles away from the place I spent all my Marches and Aprils and Mays for the past 25 years...spring still feels the same.

I Wore Shorts! In March! For A Whole Half Hour!

Today was a good day, a glad-I'm-alive day. Gorgeous weather, everyone in the apartment off from work, going out and shopping with everyone, being silly and ridiculous and having fun.

Biggest accomplishment for the day was a household one: BJ was finally able to buy the drafting table he's wanted for a good year now. We all brought it home, Sameh set it up, BJ and Ryan rearranged the living room to accommodate, and I helped everyone in turn as I did a million tons of laundry. I also drove the car home when it was stuffed with four adults and a large table, so hey--I helped!

A mutual friend of everyone, Jen, came over for a little while to hang out. We had decided to watch the third season of True Blood, but for some reason we had the entire season recorded to DVR except for the very first one. >.<

Tomorrow is back to work for everyone. Boo. I don't go on until 3, so my plan is to camp out somewhere and write until then. Actually, that's the plan for both days this weekend. Score. :)

Snowpocalypse!

All the Starbucks in the area closed at 4 today due to inclement weather. Ryan still had to go in to work t 4:30, but he called me just a little while ago (9ish) to say that Target let almost everyone go home. A whole hour early! Wow! >.<

I've spent the evening getting through desk clutter and minor to do items, all with Newsradio playing on Netflix in the background. :D

Tomorrow I work noon to six (if we haven't all been buried alive beneath the five foot drifts), then I have three days off! I did have a shift on Saturday, but Katie will be gone for a few weeks for surgery and is looking to pick up as many hours as possible until then, so...mini vacation for me! Plus it's a pre-closing shift, which is what I'll do doing the entire time she's gone, and I hate those, sooo yeah. :D

Ryan has just arrived home! Only took him twenty minutes or so, although he said the roads were mostly unplowed, and people couldn't decide between one or two lanes of traffic.

I can't wait to wake up tomorrow and see if I can open the front door to the building. :D

Long Hard Day. Yeah.

I worked for a whopping two and a half hours today.

I was scheduled for 1:30. Unfortunately, I'm a dip, and didn't think I needed more than 10 minutes to warm up and clean off my car after two days of nonstop lake effect snow. Needless to say, I was late.

Then, because of this same nonstop snow, we closed at 3:30.

I clocked in around a quarter to two, clocked out around a quarter after four.

And drove home under clear, cloudless, empty skies.

Of course, it's going to start snowing gangbusters again tonight--if it hasn't started already--so I feel a little less guilty about that last part.

Ryan is almost entirely better (yay antibiotics). Sameh, on the other hand, is getting worse. Both eyes now have pink eye, and the right one is swelling, she thinks because of a reaction to the eye drops she put in when the pink eye first appeared. Poor thing...at least her cough seems better!

And now to sleep. Wonder if I'll be able to find my car in the morning...

*Pant Pant*

Yesterday (Monday):
[o] sleep in
[o] go out with Ryan with the plans of shopping for Christmas presents, with a quick stop at the eye place next to BJ's Starbucks to see about an appointment and prices
[o] find that the optometrist is available and ready, spend a couple hours there getting Ryan an eye exam and new glasses. Yay! He hasn't had either for THREE YEARS! Also got suggestions for eye drops to help his dry eyes, and turns out our insurance is AWESOME, and the whole thing came to under $200. Eye Site Optical is also the prettiest and coolest optical place I've ever been to and had the neatest, trendiest glasses ever! Highly recommend!
[o] stopped at BJ's Starbucks to get some drinks and a snack :D
[o] got Secret Santa present at mall (muahaha)
[o] did some quick shopping but didn't buy anything else
[o] got gas, got dinner, went home
[o] WoWed for a little bit, but moved to TV when Ryan's poor dilated eyes couldn't take the computer anymore. The TV, at least, doesn't need to be focused on to be enjoyed
[o] watched an awesome episode of Top Gear, went to bed without a single thought to my blogging audience. Sorry!

Today!
[o] Ryan got up at 8:30 and went off to work
[o] I slept until 11 and opened the curtains only to shriek "REALLY?!?!" at MORE SNOW coming out of the sky. Seriously?!
[o] did laundry
[o] laundry was stupid. Went back and forth between apartment and laundry room several times due to forgetting quarters, not having enough clothes to fill machine, forgetting keys, etc.
[o] took very quick shower
[o] ran to grocery store and was stupid there as well, going back and forth across the store to get things I'd forgotten
[o] came home, put groceries away, sorted through laundry and combined two half loads of Not Quite Dry laundry into one dryer

I am now waiting for that last load, which will really only be taken out and thrown onto the bed, as I will have to immediately leave for work afterwards. Between then and now, however, I wanted to get this entry up so no one thought I was dead (don't ask me why Sunday's entry appeared as a Saturday one, it shouldn't have, my apologies for any confusion), and now I'll be giving some new tiny tupperwares a quick wash and filling them with nuts and grapes before throwing them into my bag and throwing work clothes on.

I'm closing tonight, and, as I mentioned previously, it's snowing fairly heavily* outside, so I'm guessing it's going to be pretty slow. I'm hoping to be able to relax for the first time since I last worked!

*I will say this for Indiana snow: it's light and powdery, so it's not caving in roofs, turning car-cleaning into an immensely sweaty chore, or really doing anything but being pretty and making it cold and making everyone drive a bit slower, which isn't too bad a thing as it is, eh?

WHEE!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow...*Puke*

It snowed some more. Cuz we needed it.

Took me forty minutes to get to work, but only twenty to get home, so I guess my commute today averaged out to normal?

Tomorrow is a glorious day off. The plan is Christmas shopping, but we'll see how the weather is! Yayyyy.

I'm tired, I had a 7 1/2 hour day that was mostly just sitting on my butt because it was SO FREAKING SLOW, and I haven't eaten in four hours, soooo....night!

As A Friend Said, It's Like Living In A Snow Globe...

I have done...nothing today.

Well, okay, that's not quite true.

I slept, ate, played some WoW, and puts lots of music into my computer. I even figured out how to properly sort it all when WMP decided to be dumb about it.

I didn't do laundry, I didn't go buy the snacks I forgot to get yesterday...in short, I didn't leave the house.

If you're wondering why not, here are some pictures in answer:

Snowy Balcony

Snowy Balcony

Snowy Tree

As you can see, the roads are actually in pretty good shape. However, there are still plenty of morons out there, and it's really cold, and it's my day off, and I wanted to just have a relaxing day and just LAY OFF, WOULD YA?!

...

*cough*

Tomorrow is back to work until Monday! Woulda been Tuesday, but L was nice enough to switch shifts with me, so I only work six days in a row instead of seven. :D Also, without realizing it, I got an extra two hours, since my original shift was only 6 hours and hers is 8. Yay more monies!...although that only brings me up to 38 hours, aaaand I'm sure to have plenty of cut hours as has been the norm for the past month and a half. Ah well. *crosses fingers*

It's funny, I hate having my hours cut because, y'know, I like money, but at the time it happens, I'm a little happy about it. They get cut for a reason: we're slow, and who wants to sit around with nothing to do, not allowed to do anything but clean the same thing over and over again or stare at the wall until a customer comes in? Also, work vs. home isn't a tough decision. So it's a love-hate thing, I guess.

This coming Sunday I will finally be able to start poking at Found again, and showing it to people to get feedback. I've been eager to get to it, or to get to a new story, or something. NaNo certainly re-awoke the writer in me...I know I can do it, in both ability and discipline, and undoubtedly with a TON less stress, what with the deadline gone. Although I do plan on giving myself deadlines, just not 50K-in-30-days-with-full-time-job deadlines. Not literal deadlines.

Anyway. Back to relaxing. :)

Snowing and Gaming and...uh...Something. Oh My!

The internet decided to not work last night, so I was unable to blog. Funnily enough, we didn't realize it until fairly late, since we spent the night watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on TV.

There's not a whole lot to talk about. It's been snowing quite a lot over the weekend, making the world white and pretty and not nearly as bad to navigate as one would think. Boy howdy, though, how it's slowed down business!

The weekend also saw us out of peppermint syrup...then out of caramel brulee...then out of white mocha. Peppermint is stupid because we have it all year 'round but are running out of it because peppermint mochas are a "holiday beverage;" caramel brulee is the next drink all the disappointed peppermint mochas get; but it's running out of white mocha that really scared me because, I swear, white mocha customers are the highest maintenance of all of them. Most white mocha customers are rich girls or women used to getting what they want, and at least 75% (but probably closer to 90%) of the white mochas are nonfat and no whip. The screaming customer from months ago? White mocha!

Fortunately, today's order delivery had six boxes of peppermint, three boxes of caramel brulee, and four boxes of white mocha. Also a huge box of stir sticks, which we've been out of for almost a month. Huzzah!

Tonight is the launch of Cataclysm, the next expansion for the game World of Warcraft. For those who don't know (somehow), the entire apartment plays WoW. Three of them obsessively. I'm...only a little obsessive, but I'm still excited. The new expansion changed the entire planet the game is based on, and made one of my favorite races playable as a class I've always been interested in!

...okay, so it's nerd talk, and I'll keep it to a minimum. But, as I said, all four of us are big fans of the game, and all four of us have tomorrow off, and we're all going on a large grocery run tonight for gaming fuel, and...well, it's all nerdy up in here, what can I say.

As I said, tomorrow is my day off, so I'll be sleeping and playing and doing lots of laundry (snow + long pants + not changing into snow boots before leaving work = holy crap cold wet pant hems). The rest of the week should be...interesting. I took a shift at another store to help out on my second day off, so I'm working straight from Wednesday to next Monday. However, they're all afternoon and evening shifts, which means they're with my favorite people at the slowest time. More work, but less stress. Hopefully a winning combination.

Ah, Horace, I Know Him...More Than I'd Like.

Yesterday was a fairly uneventful day. Ryan and I slept in, lazed about the house, went grocery shopping, made dinner, played WoW. La de dah.

Today, I have the house allll to myself until Ryan gets home at 1:30. We both got up at 7--he had work at 8, and I wanted to help him by scraping ice off his car, although there wasn't any to clean off. Then I finished off Watership Down by 10:30, made myself a breakfast of leftovers, checked my feed, and...here I am.

It snowed yesterday! And it's still around today. Not nearly as bad as I was expecting my next Indiana snowfall to be (did I mention that weather here means it?), but it's still plenty cold. At least the roads aren't bad (*knocks on wood*).

So, as I said, house all to myself...except for the cat. >.< Horace isn't a bad cat per se, but dang he can be an annoying little shit. Meows constantly, even when he's had food and water and attention. Insists on curling up behind my desk chair without realizing that I'm bound to roll over his tail or even his legs one of these days. Attacks anything hanging from a wall or table such as purse straps, apron strings, robe ties, etc. Likes to wait around corners and leap out, splayed and ready to take out your leg. Ergh.

I could handle it all if he was maybe more affectionate. And he can be with Sameh or Ryan--and if BJ's co-worker Ali comes over Horace turns into a complete slut--but he doesn't seem to like me at all. Not in an aggressive way, just a shunning way. He'll curl up on anyone else but me, and seems to not like it when I try to pick him up and pet him, and I swear he attacks my legs more often than anyone else. I just don't get this cat!

Currently, he is under Ryan's desk, eating at crumbs and things Ryan has dropped from past snacks. Soon he'll no doubt curl up on the bed, or behind my chair. Sigh.

Indiana Weather: It Means It.

I couldn't tell you how much sleep I got last night. I tossed and turned, dreams melded with being wide awake in the dark. I felt hyper enough to be up and at 'em at 6, then my alarm was going off for 7 only 2 seconds later.

It was a rough night.

I went in to Starbucks, found my boss, and asked "Is it too late to say 'no, I don't want to work at 8 in the morning?'" She said yes, and I said oh, and the day went on.

The day included snow! First it was the saddest, most pathetic Charlie-Brown snow you'd ever seen. Sad little flakes that didn't add up to anything.

I left a little after 6 because the sky had turned white, visibility was beginning to look hazy, and I was afraid of it getting cold enough to freeze.

It's still snowing. Big ol' wet snowflakes. Ick.

I got some writing done, although not nearly as much as I would have liked. I think I just work better when I don't have work-work. My current word count is 8,112; ideally it would be 8,335. I'm not that far off, but I just had a hard time concentrating.

In case the rambling nature of this post wasn't enough proof for you.

Tonight is a raid night, although I'm not participating. I may spend the evening poking at other photography projects, or I may try to plug in my ears and unplug my internet and bang out those last 223 words. Meh. We'll see.

Tomorrow is another day off. Ryan has work at 9:30, meaning we'll be getting up at 8:30. There's an area write-in at Indulgences, a pastry shop a few minutes away that has caught my eye before. It's only from 8 to noon, so I'd get 2 1/2-3 hours at best, but still. An excuse for a pastry shop and a write-in with, at the very least, my super-cool municipal liaison? Sounds good to me!

Wish me luck!

Win All Over.

Today was a good day.

[o] Day off. Win.
[o] Ryan's day off. Double win!
[o] Paycheck from Target. Money win!
[o] Did some grocery shopping and came up under budget. Double money win!
[o] Gorgeous day out. Weather win.
[o] Pilgrimage to Goshen for our first Dunkin Donuts visit since we left Connecticut. Sweet tooth win.
[o] Spent Best Buy gift card BJ gave us*: Extra micro-SD card and a SD card reader for my computer, so I can now have one card each for music and pictures, and actually use my phone's music-playing capabilities instead of saving up to buy a separate mp3 player. Efficiency win.
[o] Got pretty coat at Target, since it's getting cooler out now, it's a gorgeous coat, and it was at a fantastic price (combined with Ryan's employee discount). Clothing win.
[o] Watched Iron Man 2 on Blu-Ray with Sameh. Action movie/pretty actors win.
[o] Got important (read: work clothes) laundry done. Productivity win.
[o] NaNoWriMo site 2010 relaunch, plus discovering that the Municipal Liaison for the South Bend region had already kick-started the region message board with some welcome threads, which included the mention of weekend NaNoWriMo write-ins and meet-ups. Possible social win.
[o] No work until 1, so I can sleep in a bit. SLEEP WIN.
[o] Had a whole day that was leisurely yet productive, laid back yet efficient, filled with one-on-one time with my love. Day win. :)

*For those who missed how awesome our roommate is: he and Sameh got a gift card from Best Buy when they bought Halo: Reach. He gave it to us because he knows that we're low on cash, and he wanted us to have some frivolous money. Biggest. Sweetheart. Ever.

"Day Off."

Yesterday's entry just plain slipped out of my head. That seems to be happening a lot lately--sorry!

Today is my first "day off" this week. I don't have to "work" in that I don't have to make coffee or clean anything or serve customers today. I do, however, have to be at my store at one for the two-hour store meeting, followed by a three-hour "party" at Gino's East. I'd be less annoyed if it weren't taking up a large chunk of the middle of my day, but oh well, I'll live. I get to spend my evening with Ryan, hopefully will be able to get some Halo: Reach playing time in with Sameh...honestly, it looks to be a good day, overall. I'm not even annoyed about the meeting, and the "party" should be fun, even if one of my favorite people is on vacation...one of my unfavorites is in class until almost the end of it, so it kinda-sorta evens out.

The weather is starting to get cooler. It was in the 50s yesterday, looks to be the same today; cool enough to require a hoodie, even while working. The air is starting to feel like fall, too...that crispness is there, even if 99% of the leaves are still green. Heck, when I left work last night at 11:30, the air almost felt like snow. *cross fingers that it won't come for months and months*

It's going to be weird going through a non-New England fall. I just now realized that it's not going to be the same; even if the air is crisp, and the leaves colorful, it won't be the same as Connecticut.

Off to move the laundry, continue the day, etc etc.

No Longer Just Certifiable.

Today was fun and interesting...in a not-genuine-but-not-quite-sarcastic-either kind of way.

I got up on time only because I'm neurotic about time. My alarm was set for 9, I was waking up and checking my phone every 15 or so minutes from 8:30 on. I was surprised to see that it was 9:05 the last time I checked, then realized that I had never taken my phone off vibrate after leaving work yesterday, so I hadn't hear it go off at 9. Whups!

Got fairly lost on my way to the Goshen store for my class, but got myself unlost at a fairly good pace. As usual, I second-guessed myself right into a wrong turn, getting off the bypass an exit too soon, only discovering this when I took the correct route back home.

The class wasn't bad at all, actually. The only other "student" was the Ironwood SM, who has also been at the company about three months. The class was mostly taught by the Goshen SM and the Main SM. It was mostly watching videos and discussing corporate principles and missions, with some coffee and pastry tasting sprinkled in. I got a Green Apron book (little booklet outlining partner goals and such) and a Tea Passport (akin to the Coffee Passport, where you jot down notes and get a stamp for each coffee you taste, except--surprise!--it's for tea), and I should be getting a special pin in the next few weeks to show that I'm certified.

Um...yay! I guess!

We got out an hour and a half early, I got to drive home in pounding rain, and spent the rest of the day chatting to Chris and poking around online, in my pajamas, while eating way too much edamame.

Tomorrow is work, and Friday is off. I am looking forward to Friday, and even to a "normal" work day tomorrow. I prefer making drinks and serving customers to all other aspects of my job, and am hoping it's a day full of just that. :)

Brain?

I have been an absolute moron the past three days. Making mistakes, starting tasks or sentences only to forget what I was going for in the first place, saying things that don't make any sense, forgetting things, wandering in circles, etc etc.

I have a great many things to blame, so that's, you know. Something.

[o] The amount of people-shifting going on in my store, and the district as a whole, is just ridiculous. New people everywhere, all of them superiors, and I'm never sure if I'm going to go in and find another co-worker's name scratched off the schedule. Nerve-wracking!

[o] The weather can't make up it's mind. It's been muggy and sunny, with random dark and foreboding clouds that look like they're about to rain down all kinds of hell, and then don't. Quite literally, the atmosphere is confusing.

[o] I. Am. Exhausted.

....yeah, I'm out.

Happy Birthday to David! I gave him a call, and the card I got him FINALLY went out today, although he won't be home to see it for another, oh, three weeks. Ah well.

The Day Won. It Was Bloody.

I am...extremely cranky.

Started off today waking up Ryan around 10:45 due to using iPad, which doesn't usually wake him up. Next up, found that I not only missed my Wii goal, I gained a bit of weight.

At work, I had a serious case of the stupids. I forgot to give customer change, charge them for drinks, made them the wrong drinks, etc etc. I broke four plates (although I put some blame on whoever had the fantastic idea of stacking them upside down, which makes them about 500% more likely to slip off their pile). I messed up a regular's drink because I was trying too hard to help.

I get home to find that the card I put in the mail this afternoon is still there, now with the company of two junk fliers. This means that the postal worker came and opened our box, but didn't take it for whatever reason. Grr.

And, the icing on the cake: Ryan's car is broken. Connecting the battery makes the horn go again, stuck in one long note, but does not allow the car to start. OY.

On the plus side:
[o] new shift, J, is very nice and sweet and cool. I look forward to working with her.
[o] visit from the household! Always nice :D
[o] HUGE rainbow near the end of my shift. A full, perfect, movie-esque rainbow. Really pretty.

And now to get into pajamas, eat something, and watch yesterday's True Blood. Tomorrow is another day...and it's a day off to boot!

When It Rains...

A second update! Because stuff has happened since the last one! Exciting stuff! INTERESTING stuff!

It thunderstormed. Big surprise. Lots of water. Whoop dee do.

Ryan and I are both home, playing World of Warcraft. Sameh knocks on the door. She says a neighbor was knocking on doors asking if anyone owned a black Toyota. Ryan does. We ask why.

Oh, the parking lot's flooded and the black Toyota in question's horn is stuck.

We go downstairs, and sure enough:

Flooded Car

One of our neighbors helped unhook the battery to make the horn shut off. Fortunately, neither he or Ryan were electrocuted in the process.

And I got more pictures, to show you folks in Connecticut (and other parts of the country) the FUN you're missing!

The other half, the BETTER half, of today: Ryan has an interview tomorrow! At Target! At 10:30 in the morning!

Yeah, that last part's going to be brutal...

Fortunately, his interview is hours before I have work, so he can take my car and not have to worry about drying his out beforehand. All prayers, thoughts, wishes, energy, etc toward him are MUCH appreciated! Think employed thoughts!

Grumble Grumble.

Today was interesting. First morning shift in a week, massive thunderstorm in the middle of the day, coworkers I haven't spent much time working with thus far, etc.

I have one coworker who seems content to ignore me unless (a) I ask a question about how to do something, or (b) I've done something wrong that happens to catch her attention. Today's example: I open the pastry case to get cookies, turn around to grab a bag and tongs to grab them with, turn back to see her about to close the case as she walks by. I say "Wait!" She stops, turns and sees me out of the corner of her eye, says very distractedly "Keep this closed," and keeps walking and talking like nothing happened. I have yet to have a problem with leaving the case open, I was going to come back with full hands, so I opened it for convenience. She barely noticed any of this, barely noticed I was there, but yet thought it best to admonish me. Just in case.

Yesterday's example: I walked in, she was the first person I saw. I said "Hi [name], sorry I'm late." She replies, "Yeah. You're late." In a tone that implies I didn't already know, despite the fact that she responded to my saying I was late, and, oh yeah, I just acknowledged I was late.

I don't know...she's a shift, so she's a step above me, so I can understand not wanting to be buddy-buddy with me...except she's buddy-buddy with everyone else. She's a good worker, she's nice, she just seems to have me set to Invisible. Both of these instances were the only times she spoke to me the entire shift, except to tell me to take my break. Shrug.

The thunderstorm was fun! We knew it was coming in, but it still surprised us...enough that two workers had to dash outside to save table umbrellas. Two of them were left outside, since they were already down and not about to blow away, and they didn't want to touch them any more than needed, since they're made of metal.

I am currently pretty tired, my feet are very sore, I have an online meeting to get to right about now, and a four-hour raid in five hours. And, in case it wasn't obvious, I'm a little grumpy. All I want to do is sleep. Oy.
